Year 2

Our year 2 curriculum is based on the statutory guidance of the National Curriculum and builds upon learning from year 1. As a school we have designed our curriculum to meet the needs of the children and families that we serve, so that learning can be revisted throughout the year and into the following academic years. We work in collaboration with Halfway Junior School to ensure that our Key Stage 1 curriculum feeds seamlessly into the Key Stage 2 curriculum.

In year 2, children record their work in subject specific work books, however, practical and hands-on learning is still important and happens regularly.

Each year in June any children in year 2 who did not pass the Phonics Screening check will re-sit this check. The check is designed to confirm whether individual children have learned sufficient phonic decoding and blending skills. The test consists of 40 words – it is a combination of 20 real words and 20 nonsense words for the child to read 1:1 with a teacher. This is carried out by a member of staff who familiar to the children and who has undertaken the phonics testing training. The results of this are reported to parents in the summer.

More information about this check can be found here.

During year 2, families will also need to apply for a year 3 place. The majority of our children move on to Halfway Junior School, who we are federated with. There is a robust transition process in place for all children during year 2 and additional transition arrangements are made for children who would benefit from it. More inforamtion about this transition can be found in the 'Transition' section of our website here.

Curriculum maps

Every half term we send home curriculum maps to share with families what the children will be learning in the half term. These are designed to support home-school learning, as well as give families ideas of ways to build on the learning that happens in school.
