Our year 1 curriculum is based on the statutory guidance of the National Curriculum and builds upon learning from the EYFS curriculum. The structure of the curriculum in year 1 is more formalised than EYFS, with lessons focused on specific subject areas. As a school we have designed our curriculum to meet the needs of the children and families that we serve, so that learning can be revisted throughout the year and into the following academic years.
To aid the transition from EYFS to year 1, continuous and enhanced provision may still be seen in year 1 classrooms at the start of the Autumn term (this is cohort need depending) and evidence of learning is still practicial and recorded through observations shared with families via Tapestry. As the year progresses, the children will record their learning more frequently in subject specific work books, however, practical and hands-on learning is still important and happens regularly.
A change from EYFS is that from the start of year 1, children will be getting changed in school for PE. Therefore, the development of self-management is a key skill to be working on with your child as they prepare to move from Foundation Stage 2 and into year 1.
Each year in June the year 1 children will complete the year 1 Phonics Screening check. The check is designed to confirm whether individual children have learned sufficient phonic decoding and blending skills. The test consists of 40 words – it is a combination of 20 real words and 20 nonsense words for the child to read 1:1 with a teacher. This is carried out by a member of staff who familiar to the children and who has undertaken the phonics testing training. Children who do not pass this in year 1 will be re-assessed in year 2, in the same manner. The results of this are reported to parents in the summer.
More information about this check can be found here.
Every half term we send home curriculum maps to share with families what the children will be learning in the half term. These are designed to support home-school learning, as well as give families ideas of ways to build on the learning that happens in school.
