Phonics Screening Check
The phonics screening check is a test that year 1 pupils undertake. This test is part of their education in phonics and it tests them on their ability to read and decode a series of words. During the check, children are asked to decode a series of 40 different words. While most of these will be real words, there are also be some pseudo-words mixed in (we call these ‘alien’ words). These words are phonetically similar to real words, but don’t have any meaning.
The phonics screening test takes place in early June, as children approach the end of year 1. Over the recent years the pass mark has been 32. If a child does not pass the check in year 1, they will re-sit it at the end of year 2.
