Foundation Stage 2

‘Play is essential for children’s development, building their confidence as they learn to explore, relate to others, set their own goals, and solve problems. Children learn by leading their own play, and by taking part in play and learning that is guided by adults.’

EYFS Statuatory Framework (2023)

Children in the early years at Halfway Nursery Infant School participate in both child initiated and planned lessons and activities, both indoors and outdoors.  Experienced teachers and early years practitioners plan lessons, activities and opportunities that develop children’s skills, knowledge and understanding of the world around them, but also offers them experiences and opportunities they may not have encountered before - making memories of school that will last a lifetime.

Every child is unique and, when planning, our practitioners carefully assess and reflect on the different rates at which children are developing and adjust their practice appropriately, also taking account of each child’s interests and dispositions to learn.

The ambitious Early Years Curriculum at Halfway Nursery Infant School has been developed to ensure that children make the best possible progress towards achieving the Early Years Foundation Stage Good Level of Development (GLD) at the end of the Foundation Stage 2 year.  It offers a broad range of engaging learning experiences, meaning children are excited to learn and motivated to achieve.

Our Foundation Stage 2 curriculum and provision enables children to take the next steps in their educational journey from their time in nursery. Whilst a lot of our nursery children go on to join us in Foundation Stage 2, we also welcome lots of pupils from other providers and those who have not been to nursery before and ensure that our transition to Foundation Stage 2 is robust and tailored to individual needs. (More information about our transition process can be found in the transition section of our website).

We use the Little Wandle programme to develop those all important early reading skills.  This starts in nursery with ‘Foundations for phonics’ and continues into Foundation Stage 2 with more formal phonics and early reading lessons (please see the 'Phonics and early Reading' section of the website for more information).

‘Children in the early years get off to a strong start. New starters settle quickly into the well-established routines. Children are safe and comfortable in the highly stimulating environment. There is a sharp focus on children’s language development and early mathematics. Children are independent. They are resilient and persevere with challenging activities.’

Curriculum maps

Every half term we send home curriculum maps to share with families what the children will be learning in the half term. These are designed to support home-school learning, as well as give families ideas of ways to build on the learning that happens in school.
